Buddhist 'Holy War': The Enabling Mechanisms that Make It Possible

Prof. Brian Victoria is currently the director of Antioch University’s study‐abroad program in Kyoto, Japan. He received his M.A. in Buddhist Studies at Komazawa University in Tokyo and his Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from Temple University in the United States. His research background includes two detailed and acclaimed books, Zen at War and Zen War Stories, on the links between Japanese militarism and the Zen Buddhist tradition. As a Sōtō Zen priest as well as a scholar, Prof. Victoria has actively provoked Buddhist institutions to carefully consider their past and present relationships to political agendas and physical violence.
